Dental Insurance 101 - Keeping a Healthy Smile

Maintaining good oral health is essential to your overall health. Knowing how to take care of your teeth and gums is vitally important. Seeing your dentist on a regular basis helps you to manage your oral hygiene. When you are choosing  a new dental insurance plan for yourself or your family? Before you get started, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the various types of dental plans out there.

There are several different types of dental insurance plans – each will work differently in terms of out-of-pocket costs, deductibles, benefits,  and so on. Some dental plans will offer a wider network of dentists for a higher monthly premium; others may be less expensive but restrict coverage for certain procedures or require more out-of-pocket spending on treatments such as root canal therapy or dental implants.

The four most common types of dental insurance plans are PPO, DHMO, Dental Discount Plans, and Managed Fee-for-Service Plans. Each of those require you to see in network dentists for the most savings. There are many variations of each of these plans, and there are a lot of carriers in the market for both individual and group plans, which are typically offered by employers to their employees.

There are also indemnity plans that provide a payment to you instead of the provider. In that type of plan, you pay the dentist for the charge,  then submit a claim to the insurance company for whatever the scheduled reimbursement is for that procedure.
